Press Release

For the twelfth year running and after providing a total of NT$55,000,000 in scholarships, CDF’s 'Heritage 100 X Tutelage 100' program will sponsor NT$5.0mn this year to 100 outstanding, yet economically disadvantaged, university students around the country. CDIB Foundation Chairman Angelo J.Y. Koo notes, “The selected university students will serve as CDF’s partners in advancing public welfare as 100 hours of their time will be dedicated to tutoring underprivileged children in the coming year.” The program offers 100 scholarships this year. The deadline for applications is May 31.

For the twelfth consecutive year, the CDF-sponsored 'Heritage 100 X Tutelage 100' program has seen the convergence of positive energy in society, leading our youth forward. Chen Liang-Jin, a graduate student from National Cheng Kung University and a four-time recipient of the scholarship, is considered a role model for the foundation and for many others. By taking part in the program, he’s been able to support himself financially while tutoring a third-grade boy of the Wu family. The boy’s mother is a Vietnamese migrant and finds it difficult to assist her son in his studies. After the tragic passing of the boy’s father, the boy’s mother was left as the sole provider for her family. She found a job working at a restaurant to help make ends meet. However, the long working hours leaves her with little time for parenting duties. During Chen Liang-Jin’s tutoring visits, the boy’s older brother would often be present. The older brother is a junior high school student that was obsessed with video games and had little interest in continuing education. While Chen’s tutoring responsibility is to the younger brother, out of concern he decided to reach out. He noticed that every day the big brother would look after his younger brother by cooking for him, and was actually very talented. Chen Liang-Jin determined the older brother was only temporarily lost in the pursuit of his dreams, and ended up assisting him with an application to a culinary school at a vocational institution. Furthermore, Chen Liang-Jin helped him find access to student loans to fund his education. Under Chen’s guidance, the older boy was accepted into a higher education program. Now that he’s rekindled his passion for learning, the big brother aspires to one day become a master chef.

The CEO of CDIB Foundation, Yang Xiu-Jyuan, says, “The objective of this scholarship and grant program is to see youth shine and allow seniors to provide counselling and guidance to juniors.” He also feels “profoundly moved and in awe by what Chen Liang-Jin has done for others as a graduate student.”

Chairman Koo has always believed that education is the most valuable investment, and companionship is the most powerful way to make an impact. The 'Heritage 100 X Tutelage 100' program not only seeks to financially assist college students in need, but also wants to provide companionship for underprivileged K-9 children, providing them with a positive outlook on life.

The 'Heritage 100 X Tutelage 100' program has granted a total of NT$55,000,000 to 1,000 recipients, who have volunteered over 100,000 hours for local families in need. We encourage more university students to participate in the cause to help CDF and the foundation elevate underprivileged youths.
